Adirovich, Emmanuil Ilyich

Emmanuil Ilyich Adirovich (24.08.1915— 10.09.1973) was a Soviet physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR (1962). He was born in Melitopol. He graduated from Moscow University (1940) and worked at the Physical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1962 he was head of a department at the Physico-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR.
His research concerned solid-state physics, semiconductor physics, the theory of excitons, optoelectronics and solid-state electronics. He was one of the founders of the band theory of luminescence in crystals and of dielectric electronics. He developed the theory of non-radiative electronic transitions in solids, and predicted and discovered the “cold flash” phenomenon. He established the law of the electronic polarisation and depolarisation of photoelectrets, and worked out the general theory of the photoelectret state. He constructed the theory of optocouplers and optocoupler circuits. He discovered the effects of anomalously large photovoltages and anomalously large photomagnetic voltages in semiconductor films. He obtained an exact solution of the problem of emission currents in a dielectric for thermionic and field emission from a metal, and developed the theory of space-charge-limited currents.
