Amaldi, Edoardo

Edoardo Amaldi (born 5.09.1908) was an Italian experimental physicist and a member of the Accademia dei Lincei (1948). Born in Carpaneto. He graduated from the University of Rome (1929) and from 1937 was professor at that university (in 1949 — 60 director of the university's Institute of Physics). In 1945 —52 he was also director of the Centre for Nuclear Physics, and in 1952 —60 of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics. He also worked at CERN. His research concerned atomic spectroscopy, neutron physics and the physics of cosmic rays and of elementary particles. As a member of Fermi's group he took part in the discovery in 1934 of the slowing-down of neutrons and in the study of their properties. He proved the existence of the selective absorption of neutrons (1936) and detected the emission of gamma rays and of internal conversion electrons on the capture of neutrons by nuclei. Together with E. Fermi he made some of the first measurements of the cross-sections for the capture of neutrons by protons. In 1960, together with others, he discovered the anti-sigma-plus hyperon, and in 1955 he had obtained an indication of the existence of the antiproton. A member of a number of academies of sciences and scientific societies, and in particular a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1958). In 1957 — 60 he was president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.
