August, Ernst Ferdinand

Ernst Ferdinand August (18.11.1795 - 25.03.1870) was a German physicist and inventor. He was born in Prenzlau (now in the GDR). In 1817-27 he was a teacher at the Joachimsthal Gymnasium, in 1827 he became director of the Köllnisches Gymnasium, and later he was professor in Berlin.
His research was in the field of heat. In 1828 he invented the psychrometer (the August psychrometer). He proposed empirical formulas for determining the dew point and the pressure and density of water vapour in air.
