In 1935–49 he worked at Cornell University (in 1943–46 he headed the experimental physics division at Los Alamos). In 1949–76 professor at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena). His research was in nuclear and neutron physics and in spectroscopy. Independently of others he predicted (1936) the magnetic moment of the neutron. He detected (1938) the emission of internal conversion electrons by substances that capture neutrons.
