Alexei Iosifovich Batschinski (2.04.1877-31.07.1944) was a Soviet physicist. He was born in Chełm (now in the Polish People's Republic). He graduated from Moscow University (1899) and worked there (from 1918 as professor). In 1930 he lost his sight and gave up teaching.
His work was in the field of molecular physics and thermodynamics, in particular the study of the surface tension and viscosity of liquids and of the dependence of saturated vapour pressure on temperature. He established (1912) the law of the viscosity of a liquid (the Batschinski law).
He was the author of widely known textbooks for secondary schools.
