Ata Abdurakhmanovich Berdyev (born 13.10.1914) is a Soviet physicist and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (1969), its vice-president in 1967-75. He was born in Turkmenia (now the Iskra collective farm, Turkmen SSR). He graduated from the Ashkhabad Pedagogical Institute (1939). In 1951-67 he was director of the Physico-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR, and from 1975 head of a department of that institute and professor at Turkmen University (Ashkhabad).
His work concerns optics, molecular physics and acoustics. He built acoustic installations that make it possible to study by a direct method the absorption and dispersion of ultrasonic and hypersonic waves in liquids over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. He studied relaxation phenomena in a number of liquids. By the method of acoustic spectroscopy he studied the propagation of longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves in highly viscous liquids and detected relaxation effects. He developed impedance acoustic apparatus for studying the shear elasticity of liquid media.
Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of the Turkmen SSR (1974).
