Boyko, Boris Borisovich

Boris Borisovich Boyko (born 6.08.1923) is a Soviet physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1974). He was born in the village of Khodorovka (now in Mogilev Region). He graduated from Byelorussian University (1951). In 1951—57 he worked at the Physico-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR, in 1958-74 at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (from 1968 as head of a laboratory), and from 1975 he has been director of the Institute of Solid-State and Semiconductor Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR. His work is in the fields of physical optics, quantum electronics and continuum mechanics. He carried out a series of studies of the reflection and the refraction of light at boundaries with amplifying and with nonlinear media, studied in detail the amplification of light on reflection from an amplifying medium, and predicted optical hysteresis in the reflection of light from a positively nonlinear medium. He detected the effect of strong magnetic fields on the quantum yield of the luminescence of condensed media. He created devices for controlling laser radiation and a number of new types of laser, and developed the theoretical and the experimental foundations of the polarisation-optical method of studying viscous flow. Honoured Worker of Science of the Byelorussian SSR (1978).
