Fyodor Vasilyevich Bunkin (born 17.1.1929) is a Soviet physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1976). He was born in Moscow. He graduated from Moscow University (1952). Since 1955 he has worked at the Physical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and since 1971 he has also been professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
His research has concerned classical electrodynamics (a method of solving problems of electromagnetic radiation in anisotropic media and others), statistical radiophysics (the theory of fluctuations in non-linear and non-equilibrium systems, the theory of the propagation of wave beams in statistically inhomogeneous media and others), the interaction of powerful optical radiation with matter (the theory of the stimulated bremsstrahlung effect and of the external photoelectric effect in a strong radiation field; the propagation of optical discharges in gases in the “slow combustion” regime; the low-threshold breakdown of gases by infrared radiation near solid targets; thermochemical phenomena stimulated by laser radiation and others), and acoustics (the excitation of sound in a liquid by laser radiation; the reversal of the wavefront of sound beams by the methods of non-linear and non-stationary acoustics).
