Stuart Thomas Butler (4.07.1926 - 15.05.1982) was an Australian theoretical physicist and a member of the Australian Academy of Science. He was born in South Australia. He graduated from the University of Adelaide (1945). In 1951—53 he worked at Cornell University, in 1953—54 at the Australian National University and from 1954 at the University of Sydney (from 1959 as professor).
His research was in the field of nuclear physics, statistical physics and plasma physics. In 1951 he developed a simplified theory of the angular distribution of nucleons in the stripping reaction, and in 1953 the theory of direct nuclear reactions. He proposed a model of superconductivity.
The T. Bonner Prize (1977).
