Jean Cabannes (12.08.1885 - 31.10.1959) was a French experimental physicist and a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1946). He was born in Marseille. He graduated from the École Normale. Until 1921 he worked at the University of Marseille, in 1921 — 37 he was professor at the University of Montpellier and from 1937 at the University of Paris.
His work was in the field of molecular physics and spectroscopy. In 1928 he rediscovered the Raman scattering of light, and together with A. Daure he obtained the spectrum of depolarised scattering and discovered the wing of the Rayleigh line.
