Anders Celsius (27.02.1701-25.04.1744) — Swedish astronomer and physicist, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Born in Uppsala. He studied at the University of Uppsala, and from 1730 was a professor there, and from 1740 at the same time director of the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory.
His work was in the fields of astronomy, geophysics and physics. In 1742 he proposed a thermometer scale of one hundred degrees, in which he took as zero degrees the boiling point of water at normal atmospheric pressure and as one hundred degrees the melting point of ice. The modern Celsius scale was introduced somewhat later.
Fellow of the Royal Society and member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences.
