Chamberlain, Owen

Owen Chamberlain (born 10.07.1920) - American physicist, a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1960). Born in San Francisco. Graduated from the University of Chicago (1948). In 1942—46 he worked at Berkeley and Los Alamos. Since 1948 he has worked at the University of California at Berkeley (professor since 1958). His research concerned nuclear physics, neutron physics and high-energy physics. In 1955, together with E. Segrè and others, he discovered the antiproton (Nobel Prize, 1959). He is engaged in creating polarised proton targets for high-energy nuclear reactions. Independently of A. Abragam he obtained (1963 — 64) a target containing polarised protons.
