Dzhelepov, Boris Sergeyevich

Boris Sergeyevich Dzhelepov (born 12.04.1910) is a Soviet physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1953). He was born in Odessa. He graduated from Leningrad University (1931). In 1931-43 he worked at the Physico-Technical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1945 he has been head of a laboratory at the Radium Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and in 1935—41 and from 1944 he has also worked at Leningrad University. His research is in the field of the physics of the atomic nucleus and nuclear spectroscopy. He studied the structure of nuclei in the region of large static deformations and neutron-deficient radioactive isotopes, predicted (1951) the proton radioactivity of nuclei and, together with his co-workers, discovered many radioactive isotopes. He developed a number of new methods of gamma spectroscopy and built several precision beta and gamma spectrometers, in particular the ketron, the ritron, the elotron and gamma and beta hodoscopes. He drew up tables for the analysis of beta spectra and of the energies of beta decay, tables of the masses of nuclei, of the decay schemes of radioactive nuclei and others. USSR State Prize.
