Eremenko, Viktor Valentinovich

Viktor Valentinovich Eremenko (born 26.07.1932) is an experimental physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1978). He was born in Kharkov. He graduated from Kharkov University (1955). In 1955 — 61 he worked at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and since 1961 he has been head of a department at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. His research concerns solid-state physics, and in particular studies of how electromagnetic radiation interacts with magnetically ordered crystals and of phase transformations in magnetically ordered crystals, mainly those induced by a strong external magnetic field. He discovered and studied exciton and exciton-magnon processes in antiferromagnetic crystals (1962 — 75) and new magneto-optical effects: the “bleaching” of antiferromagnetic crystals in strong magnetic fields (1970) and the “Davydov splitting” of the exciton absorption lines of light in antiferromagnets (1971). He found and studied the scattering of light by parametric spin waves generated in nonlinear ferromagnetic resonance (1977). Together with others he discovered the intermediate state in antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic crystals in the neighbourhood of first-order orientational phase transitions induced by an external magnetic field (1970), and the double refraction of light linear in the magnetic field (1979). State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1971).
