Flick!

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT: To show how force affects inertia.
MATERIALS: a glass, a piece of card the size of a postcard, a clothes peg.

Lay the card on the glass.
Stand the clothes peg on the card so that it is over the middle of the glass. Flick the card sharply and hard with your finger so that it flies off to one side. Repeat this several times.
RESULTS: Sometimes the peg falls into the glass in its original position, and sometimes it turns over as it falls.
WHY? When you flick the card with your finger, you apply a force to it. The card moves away so fast that it has no time to carry the peg with it. The peg falls because of gravity, since the card no longer supports it. If you push the card without enough force, it drags the peg along with it, while gravity pulls the top of the peg down, and as a result the peg turns over.
