Viktor Mikhailovich Galitskii (8.09.1924—7.01.1981) was a Soviet theoretical physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (from 1976). He was born in Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (1949). In 1948-60 he worked at the I. V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, in 1960-62 and 1965-71 he was head of a department at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, in 1962 — 65 he was at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), and from 1971 again at the I. V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy (from 1974 as director of a division).
His work was in the fields of nuclear physics, plasma physics, physical optics, quantum electrodynamics, solid-state physics and the theory of superconductivity. He was one of the first to apply the methods of quantum field theory to many-body problems. Together with A. B. Migdal he developed the foundations of the Green's function method for the study of systems of many Fermi particles. He studied the possibility of the existence of nuclear matter in anomalous states (superdense nuclei, neutron nuclei and others).
