Glaser, Donald Arthur

Donald Arthur Glaser (born 21.09.1926) is an American physicist and a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1962). He was born in Cleveland. He graduated from the Case Institute of Technology (1946) and in 1950 took the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the California Institute of Technology. In 1949—59 he worked at the University of Michigan, and from 1959 he has been professor at the University of California. His work was in the fields of the physics of elementary particles, cosmic-ray physics and the application of physical methods to molecular biology. In 1952 he invented the bubble chamber for observing the tracks of charged particles (Nobel Prize, 1960). Together with others he obtained experimental proof of parity non-conservation in the decay of hyperons (1957) and determined the spin of the lambda and sigma hyperons (1958).
