Goldhammer, Dmitri Alexandrovich

Dmitri Alexandrovich Goldhammer (30.10.1860-16.12.1922) was a Russian physicist. He was born in Moscow. He graduated from Moscow University (1882). In 1884—88 he worked in Strasbourg under A. Kundt, and from 1893 he was professor at Kazan University (in 1893 — 98 he was head of the university's magnetic and meteorological observatory, and in 1916—17 its rector). His work concerned optics, magnetism and meteorology. In 1916 he attempted to construct a theory of electromagnetic phenomena in moving media different from Lorentz's theory. He was the first to study in detail (1888) magnetoresistance and thermomagnetic phenomena in ferromagnets. He is known as a populariser of physics. In 1895 he founded a number of meteorological stations and began publishing “Transactions of the Meteorological Network of Eastern Russia”.
