Herbert Sydney Green (born 17.12.1920) is an Australian theoretical physicist and a member of the Australian Academy of Science. He was born in Ipswich (England). He graduated from the Royal College of Science (1941). In 1945—49 he worked at the University of Edinburgh (in 1947 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy) and in 1949 —50 at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. From 1951 he has been professor at the University of Adelaide (Australia).
His work is in statistical physics (the theory of irreversible processes), nuclear physics, the theory of elementary particles, plasma physics, the theory of solids and general relativity. He is one of the creators of the modern theory of the liquid state (1946—47). Together with M. Born, and independently of N. N. Bogolyubov, he developed the method of correlation functions. Independently of D. V. Volkov he showed (1959) that quantum field theory admits, besides the known statistics, intermediate statistics as well, or parastatistics.
