Gulyaev, Yuri Vasilyevich

Yuri Vasilyevich Gulyaev (born 18.09.1935) is a Soviet physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1979). He was born in Tomilino, Moscow Region. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1958). Since 1958 he has worked at the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (from 1972 as deputy director), and since 1972 he has also been professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. His research concerns the physics of semiconductors and dielectrics and solid-state electronics. He is one of the founders of acoustoelectronics. He predicted and studied the transverse acoustoelectric effect in surface acoustic waves and a new type of surface acoustic wave (Gulyaev — Bleustein waves). He discovered and studied a new class of kinetic phenomena in semiconductors, in particular the acoustomagnetoelectric effect (1964), and also a number of new acousto-optic effects. He developed a theory of acoustoelectronic phenomena at high sound intensity. USSR State Prize (1974).
