Victor Franz Hess (24.06.1883 - 17.12.1964) was an Austrian physicist and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1933). He was born in Waldstein. He graduated from the University of Graz (1906), where he worked with interruptions until 1938 (professor from 1925), and in 1938—56 he was professor at Fordham University (USA).
His work concerned the physics of cosmic rays, radioactivity, atomic physics and optics. In 1912 he discovered cosmic rays (Nobel Prize, 1936) and studied the variations in their intensity. He measured the heat released by radium and the number of particles emitted by 1 g of radium in 1 s. He discovered the “ion wind”.
The E. Abbe Prize (1932) and others.
