John Hubbard (27.10.1931-27.02.1980) — English theoretical physicist. Born in London. Graduated from the University of London (1953). In 1955 — 76 he worked at the atomic research centre at Harwell (head of the theoretical group from 1961), and from 1976 at the IBM research laboratories in Monterey (California).
His research concerned solid-state physics, the many-body theory, magnetism, plasma physics and thermonuclear fusion. He developed the “dielectric approximation” in the theory of the electron gas in metals and the functional-integral method in the many-body theory. He studied the electronic structure of metals and the diffraction of neutrons in solids and liquids. He constructed a theory of the magnetism of iron. His name is also connected with the “Hubbard Hamiltonian”, the “Hubbard model” and the “Mott–Hubbard transition”.
