Jordan, Pascual

Pascual Jordan (18.10.1902-31.07.1980) was a German physicist and a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. He was born in Hanover. He graduated from the University of Göttingen (1924). In 1928 — 44 he worked at the University of Rostock (professor from 1935), in 1944—51 he was professor at the University of Berlin and from 1951 at the University of Hamburg. His work was in the field of quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, quantum electrodynamics, general relativity, the theory of gravitation, cosmology, biophysics, geophysics and mathematics. Together with M. Born and W. Heisenberg he developed (1926) the formalism of matrix mechanics. Independently of P. Dirac he worked out transformation theory (1926) and the method of second quantisation (1927-28). During the years of the Hitler regime he was an active Nazi, and in the 1950s he became a supporter of the revival of German nationalism.
