Adolfas Pranovich Jucys (12.09.1904-4.02.1974) was a Soviet theoretical physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR (1953). He was born in the village of Klausgalvu-Medsedzhyai. He graduated from Kaunas University (1931). In 1944—71 he was head of the department of theoretical physics at Vilnius University, and in 1956 — 63 director of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR.
His research was in the theory of many-electron atoms and ions. He developed a number of methods for the quantum-mechanical study of many-electron systems. He extended to many-electron atoms the theory of angular momentum, irreducible tensor operators and coefficients of fractional parentage. He studied the energy spectra of atoms and ions, their fine and hyperfine structure, and electronic transitions. He developed methods of describing complex atoms using group theory. He gave a theory of non-orthogonal orbitals.
