Mikheev, Mikhail Nikolayevich

Mikhail Nikolayevich Mikheev (born 28.10.1905) is a Soviet physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1979). He was born in Zuevka (now in Kirov Region). He graduated from Leningrad University (1930). In 1928 — 32 he worked at the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute. In 1932 —69 he was director of the Ural Physico-Technical Institute (Sverdlovsk), and from 1969 of the Institute of Metal Physics of the Ural Scientific Centre of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Sverdlovsk). His main work is in the field of magnetism. He studied the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials (steel, cast iron) as a function of the structure and the mechanical properties resulting from various thermal and chemico-thermal treatments. On the basis of these studies new original magnetic methods were created for the non-destructive testing of the quality of the thermal and chemico-thermal treatment of various steel products. USSR State Prize (1951).
