Giuseppe Stanislao Occhialini (born 5.03.1907) is an Italian physicist and a member of the Accademia dei Lincei (1958). He was born in Fossombrone. He graduated from the University of Florence and worked there in 1932 37 (in 1931 34 at Cambridge), in 1937—44 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil), in 1945—47 at the University of Bristol, in 1948-50 at the University of Brussels, in 1950-52 as professor at the University of Genoa, and from 1952 as professor at the University of Milan.
His research was in nuclear physics, cosmic-ray physics and high-energy physics. In 1932 — 33, together with P. Blackett, he constructed the first counter-controlled cloud chamber, which was an important technical achievement, and in 1933 with the help of this chamber he discovered (together with Blackett) electron-positron showers in cosmic rays, as well as the phenomenon of the formation of electron — positron pairs from a gamma quantum. He developed a technique for processing nuclear photographic emulsions and was the first to observe Auger electrons. In 1947, together with C. Powell and C. Lattes, he discovered the charged pions.
A member of a number of academies of sciences. C. Boys Prize (1950) and others.
