George Pegram (24.10.1876-12.08.1958) was an American physicist and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was born in Trinity. In 1903 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University. From 1901 he worked at Columbia University (professor from 1918).
His research concerned nuclear physics. In 1935, together with J. Dunning and others, he made the first measurements of the cross-section for the scattering of slow neutrons by protons, developed the first velocity selector for slow neutrons and discovered the strong interaction of thermal neutrons with cadmium. He put forward (1939) the idea of using graphite as a neutron moderator.
