Erich Rudolph Alexander Regener (12.11.1881—27.02.1955) was a German experimental physicist. He graduated from the University of Berlin, where he worked. In 1913 —20 he was professor at the Agricultural College in Berlin, and in 1920 — 37 at the Higher Technical School in Stuttgart. He then headed a station for the study of the physics of the stratosphere (from 1953 the Institute of Stratosphere Physics), and after the war he also worked at the Higher Technical School in Stuttgart.
His research was in atomic and nuclear physics and cosmic-ray physics. He confirmed experimentally (1908) the statistical character of the law of radioactive decay. He determined (1909) the value of the elementary electric charge and of the charge of the alpha particle. He measured the intensity of cosmic radiation at various heights (up to 30 km) and depths. He established (1933) a connection between flares on the Sun and an increase in the intensity of cosmic rays, and suggested that such events may be sources of cosmic radiation.
