Sharvin, Yuri Vasilyevich

Yuri Vasilyevich Sharvin (born 24.06.1919) — Soviet experimental physicist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1970). Born in Moscow. Graduated from Moscow University (1941). In 1941—43 he worked at the L. Ya. Karpov Physico-Chemical Institute. From 1943 he was at the Institute of Physical Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and from 1947 also taught at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (professor from 1965). His research was in superconductivity and solid-state physics. He carried out (early 1950s) measurements of the penetration depth of a magnetic field into a superconductor. He studied the intermediate state of superconductors. He detected a regular layered structure of the intermediate state in plates placed in an inclined magnetic field, which allowed him to measure the surface tension at the phase boundary, its anisotropy and its dependence on temperature in various superconductors. He discovered (1965) the dynamic intermediate state of superconductors, characterised by the motion of superconducting and normal domains under the action of an electric current flowing through the specimen. He detected a new type of surface mixed state in type I superconductors. He studied the electronic properties of normal metals. He developed a simple contactless method of measuring the residual resistance of pure metals. He carried out a series of observations of the focusing of electrons in metals by means of the method of microcontacts he had proposed. He studied the laws of reflection and refraction of charge carriers in metals at intercrystalline boundaries and of reflection from the boundary with a superconducting phase (1979).
