Shchodro, Nikolai Ksaveryevich

Nikolai Ksaveryevich Shchodro (18.05.1883-12.03.1940) - Soviet physicist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1929). Born in Tashkent. Graduated from Moscow University (1908). In 1912-24 he worked at the Moscow Higher Technical School, in 1920 — 32 at the Institute of Physics and Biophysics, and from 1933 at the Biophysics Laboratory of the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine (VIEM; from 1938 of the USSR Academy of Sciences). His research concerned electromagnetic waves, photochemistry, physical chemistry and geophysics. He obtained (1908) electromagnetic waves by the method of undamped oscillations. He studied the change in the conductivity of a coloured medium when it fades under the action of light and established the fact of the photoionisation of dyes in solution. He developed a number of methods of measuring dielectric permittivity.
