Snell, Arthur

Arthur Snell ( born 10.03.1909) is an American experimental physicist. He was born in Montreal. He graduated from the University of Toronto (1930) and McGill University (1931), and worked at the latter. In 1934—38 he was at the University of California, in 1938 —44 at the University of Chicago, and in 1944-73 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (in 1958 —67 head of the department of thermonuclear research). His research concerned nuclear physics, reactor physics, plasma physics and the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion. In 1945 he measured the multiplication factor for fast neutrons, and in 1948 he detected the beta decay of the free neutron. He studied the recoil of the neutron in beta decay.
