Edmund Clifton Stoner (2.10.1899-27.12.1968) was an English theoretical physicist and a Fellow of the Royal Society (1937). He graduated from the University of Cambridge (1921). In 1924 — 51 he worked at the University of Leeds (professor from 1939). From 1951 he was professor at the University of Cambridge.
His research concerned magnetism, the study of atomic structure and quantum statistics. In 1925 he introduced the division of the electron shells of atoms into subshells. Independently of others he extended the collectivised-electron model of ferromagnetism (the Stoner model of collectivised electrons in metals) and formulated most fully (1936) the criterion for ferromagnetism of a free Fermi gas. In 1939 he developed a method linking the Weiss molecular field with band structure.
