Fritz Strassmann (22.02.1902-24.04.1980) — a German chemist and physicist. Born in Boppard. Graduated from the Higher Technical School in Hanover (1924). From 1929 he worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry (Berlin) with O. Hahn and L. Meitner, and in 1946 — 70 he was professor at the University of Mainz and director (1946—52) of the Institute of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry.
His research was in the fields of nuclear chemistry, nuclear fission and the study of the radioactive isotopes of uranium and thorium. Together with O. Hahn he discovered the fission of uranium nuclei as a result of their bombardment by neutrons, and gave chemical proof of the fission process (1938).
E. Fermi Prize (1966).
