Ernst Karl Gerlach Stueckelberg (born 1.02.1905) — a Swiss theoretical physicist. Born in Basel. In 1927 he received his doctorate at the University of Basel. In 1927 — 32 he worked at Princeton University, and in 1933 — 35 at the University of Zurich. From 1935 he was professor at the University of Geneva, and from 1956 at the University of Lausanne.
His work concerned quantum field theory, molecular physics, thermodynamics, the theory of nuclear forces, and special and general relativity. Constructed a vector meson theory of nuclear forces (1938) and a theory of the point electron (1939). He was the first to come close to the discovery of the law of conservation of baryon charge. Put forward the idea of the compensation of divergences in quantum electrodynamics (1935, 1938) and, independently of others, extended (1953) the idea of the renormalisation group.
