Ennackal Chandy George Sudarshan (born 16.09.1931) was an Indian theoretical physicist and a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences. He was born in Kottayam. He graduated from the University of Madras (1951). In 1952 — 55 he worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay, and in 1959 — 64 at the University of Rochester. In 1964 — 69 he was professor at Syracuse University (New York State), from 1969 professor at the University of Texas and from 1970 director of the Center for Particle Theory at the university (from 1972 also professor at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore). His work was in the fields of quantum field theory, elementary-particle physics, quantum optics, classical mechanics, and the philosophy and history of physics. Together with R. Marshak (independently of R. Feynman and M. Gell-Mann) he developed (1958) the universal theory of weak interactions. Independently of G. Feinberg he put forward the tachyon hypothesis.
