Telegdi, Valentin

Valentin Telegdi (born 11.01.1922) was an American experimental physicist and a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1968). He was born in Budapest. He graduated from the University of Lausanne (1946), and in 1950 received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Zurich Polytechnic. He worked there in 1947-50. From 1951 he was at the University of Chicago (professor from 1971 — ).

His research was in elementary-particle and nuclear physics, in particular the technique of nuclear emulsions, the study of the interaction of photons with nuclei, of weak interactions, of strange particles and hypernuclei, and of the decay of the muon and of the free neutron. He observed (1957) the non-conservation of parity in the beta decay of the μ+-meson. In 1969 he measured the hyperfine splitting of muonium, and in 1970— the magnetic moment of the muon.
