Trouton, Frederick Thomas

Frederick Thomas Trouton (24.02.1863-21.09.1922) was an Irish physicist. He was born in Dublin. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin (1884), where he was then an assistant to G. Fitzgerald until 1901. In 1902-14 he was a professor at the University of London. He discovered the relation between the latent heat and the molecular weight of a substance (Trouton's law). In 1903, together with H. Noble, he performed an experiment to detect the absolute velocity of a body — a freely movable charged capacitor suspended on a thread (the Trouton-Noble experiment), which became one of the main experiments for the justification and testing of the special theory of relativity.
