Vartapetyan, Gamlet Arutyunovich

Gamlet Arutyunovich Vartapetyan (born 26.06.1927) is a Soviet experimental physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1977). He was born in Yerevan. In 1930 — 58 he lived in France. He graduated from the School of Physics and Chemistry in Paris (1952) and the University of Paris (1953). In 1952-58 he worked at the Radium Institute (Paris). From 1958 he has been head of a laboratory and deputy director of the Yerevan Physics Institute, and from 1968 also professor at Yerevan University. His research was in the field of low- and high-energy nuclear physics and the physics of elementary particles. He developed methods of detecting nuclear radiation, and studied forbidden electromagnetic transitions in strongly deformed nuclei, and also the properties of heavy and weakly deformed nuclei. He proved the influence of the structure of nuclei on the internal conversion coefficient of gamma radiation for a certain class of forbidden gamma transitions. He studied the nuclear properties of high-energy photons in the photoproduction of particles on nuclei. He was the first to confirm the theoretical prediction of the quark structure of the η resonance. In work on determining the parameters of the neutron distribution in heavy nuclei he proved the existence of a neutron “skin” in lead nuclei. He detected the emission of electromagnetic radiation during the channelling of high-energy electrons in single crystals. He studied polarisation phenomena in the photoproduction of mesons and of nucleon resonances. State Prize of the Armenian SSR (1980).
