Otto Heinrich Wiener (15.06.1862-18.1.1927) was a German physicist. He was born in Karlsruhe. He graduated from the University of Berlin (1886) and in 1887 received his doctorate at the University of Strasbourg. From 1891 he was professor at the Higher Technical School in Aachen, from 1895 at the University of Giessen, and from 1899 at the University of Leipzig and director of the Institute of Physics at the university.
His main research was in the field of optics. In 1890 he carried out an experiment with standing light waves which showed that the oscillations of the electric field take place perpendicular to the plane of polarisation, while those of the magnetic field take place in that plane itself (Wiener's experiment).
