He graduated from Tomsk University (1951). In 1955 — 69 he worked at the Siberian Physico-Technical Institute (Tomsk), from 1969 he was director of the Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and from 1964 also professor at Tomsk University. His work concerned the optics and the physics of the atmosphere. He studied the absorption of light by atmospheric gases, scattering by polydisperse systems of various aerosols, and the influence of turbulent motions in the atmosphere on the parameters of a light wave. He developed methods of remote laser sounding of atmospheric parameters.
