Zumino, Bruno

Bruno Zumino (born 28.04.1923) was an Italian theoretical physicist. He was born in Rome. In 1945 he received the degree of Doctor of Science at the University of Rome, where he then worked in 1946—49; in 1949 — 51 he worked at the M. Planck Institute of Physics (Göttingen) and in 1951—69 at New York University (professor from 1960). From 1969 he was head of the theoretical research division of CERN. His work was in the field of field theory, the theory of elementary particles and the theory of gravitation. Together with G. Lüders he derived from the CPT theorem the consequences concerning the equality of the masses and the lifetimes of particles and antiparticles (1957). Independently of others he put forward (1974) the concept of supersymmetry. He suggested (1967) that the total electromagnetic current of hadrons may be identical with a certain linear combination of the fields of the neutral vector mesons (the current–field identity). Independently of others he constructed (1967) the theory of vector dominance and predicted (1972) a charged and a neutral heavy lepton.
