Alexandrov, Evgeny Borisovich

Evgeny Borisovich Alexandrov (born 13.04.1936) is a Soviet experimental physicist and a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1979). He was born in Leningrad. He graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (1960). Since graduating he has worked, up to the present day, as head of a laboratory at the State Optical Institute. His research is in the field of physical optics and quantum electronics. He detected and studied the phenomena of the interference of atomic states, which are bound up with the particular features of the dynamics of non-stationary quantum systems, and on that basis he developed new methods of high-resolution spectroscopy. He carried out a series of studies on the optical pumping of atoms, and found new kinds of magnetic resonance (the “non-diagonal” and “parametric” resonances) and the effect of the optical self-pumping of atoms in a gas discharge. For a series of studies on the detection and investigation of new optical phenomena due to the coherence and orientation of atomic states he was awarded (1978) the USSR State Prize. D. S. Rozhdestvensky Prize (1974).
