Émile Amagat (02.01.1841 - 15.02.1915) was a French physicist and a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1902). Born in Saint-Satur. In 1867—72 he was professor at the Central Secondary School in Fribourg (Switzerland), in 1878—92 at the Catholic University of Lyon, and from 1892 at the École Polytechnique (Paris). His work was in the field of molecular physics. He studied the behaviour of gases at various pressures and temperatures, the compressibility of liquids and the dependence of the melting point on pressure. He obtained the compressibility curves of the so-called permanent gases at a pressure of 3000 atm and at 200 °C. At high gas pressures he found large deviations from the Boyle — Mariotte law. A Fellow of the Royal Society (1915).
