Charles Glover Barkla (27.06.1877-23.X 1944) was an English physicist and a Fellow of the Royal Society (from 1912). He was born in Widnes. He graduated from the University of Liverpool (1899). In 1905-09 he worked at the University of Liverpool and in 1909—13 at the University of London. From 1913 he was professor at the University of Edinburgh.
His main work concerned the physics of X-rays. In 1904 he was the first to achieve the polarisation of X-rays experimentally, thereby proving their wave nature. In 1906 he discovered characteristic X-rays. In 1917 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his research on X-rays.
