Bennet, Abraham

Abraham Bennet (1750-1799) was an English physicist and a Fellow of the Royal Society (1789). His work concerned the experimental study of electrical and magnetic phenomena, the construction of instruments, and the study of the phenomena of thunder and lightning. He invented the gold-leaf electroscope (1786), the electrometer and an electrical machine (Bennet's doubler). He was the first to observe the contact electrification of metals. He established (1786) the conductivity of flame. He improved the suspension of the magnetic needle. He studied the magnetism of iron and copper bodies.
