Galkin, Alexander Alexandrovich

Alexander Alexandrovich Galkin (4.07.1914 —22.10.1982) was a Soviet experimental physicist and an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1965). He was born in Berdyansk. He graduated from Kharkov University (1939). In 1937-41 and 1945 — 60 he worked at the Kharkov Physico-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and in 1960—65 he was deputy director of the Physico-Technical Institute of Low Temperatures of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1965 he was director of the Donetsk Physico-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and professor at Donetsk University. His research was in the field of solid-state physics and the physics of the condensed state of matter, radio spectroscopy, superconductivity and high-pressure physics. Together with others he discovered the detector properties of superconductors (1945), oscillations of the ultrasound absorption coefficient (1959), the dispersion of the speed of sound in a magnetic field (1958), the anisotropy of the energy gap in superconducting tin (1960), cyclotron resonance in tin and lead (1957) and the Rashba combined resonance in semiconductors (1965). He studied the properties of matter at high pressures. He discovered doppleron-phonon resonance in cadmium and molybdenum (1977). He detected a thermodynamically stable domain structure in antiferromagnets (1970) and the effect of the irreversible induction of new ferromagnetic states by a strong magnetic field (1971). He developed the method of unsteady hydroextrusion (1972). The State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1971). The K. D. Sinelnikov Prize (1975).
