Bucherer, Alfred Heinrich

Alfred Heinrich Bucherer (9.07.1863 — 16.04.1927) — German experimental physicist. Born in Cologne. He studied at the Technical University of Hanover (1884), at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (1885), and at Cornell (1893) and Strasbourg (1895) universities. At the last of these he took his doctorate. In 1896–98 he worked at the University of Leipzig and from 1899 at the University of Bonn (professor from 1912). His research concerned electron theory, relativity, electrochemistry and gravitation. He measured the charge of the electron and studied (1908) how the mass of an electron depends on its speed (the Bucherer experiment), confirming Lorentz's relativistic formula. Bucherer's experiments showed the conclusions of relativity to be correct and helped to win acceptance for it. He gave a theory of the moving electron (1904).
