Cohn, Emil Georg

Emil Georg Cohn (28.09.1854-28.01.1944) was a German theoretical physicist. He was born in Neustrelitz (now in the GDR). He graduated from the University of Strasbourg (1878) and worked there in 1884-1918. In 1920-35 he was professor at the University of Freiburg and in 1935 —39 at the University of Heidelberg. In 1939 he emigrated to Switzerland. His research was in the fields of the electrodynamics of moving media, magnetism and the physics of crystals. He was the author of one of the first courses on Maxwellian electrodynamics, and developed one of the pre-relativistic versions of the electrodynamics of moving bodies.
