Otto Robert Frisch (1.10.1904-22.09.1979) was an English experimental physicist and a Fellow of the Royal Society (1948). He was born in Vienna. He graduated from the University of Vienna (1926). In 1927-30 he worked in Berlin, 1930-33 in Hamburg, 1934 — 39 in Copenhagen, in 1939-40 in Birmingham, 1940-43 in Liverpool, in 1943—45 at Los Alamos, in 1945-47 at Harwell. In 1947-72 he was a professor at the University of Cambridge.
His work concerned molecular beams and nuclear physics. Together with O. Stern he measured (1933) the magnetic moment of the proton in the hydrogen molecule. In 1939 (January), together with L. Meitner, he gave the correct interpretation of the experiments of O. Hahn and F. Strassmann as the phenomenon of the fission of uranium nuclei by neutrons, and verified it experimentally, proving the existence of high-energy fragments of uranium nuclei.
