Albert Ghiorso (born 15.07.1915) is an American physicist and chemist. He was born in Vallejo, California. He graduated from the University of California (1937). In 1942—46 he worked at the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago. From 1946 he has worked at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory of the University of California at Berkeley (from 1969 as director of the heavy-ion linear accelerator).
His research concerned the transuranium elements, the nuclear properties of the isotopes of the heavy elements, reactions induced by heavy ions, and the systematics of radioactive decays. He took part in the discovery of the new transuranium elements americium, curium, berkelium, californium, einsteinium, fermium, mendelevium and lawrencium, and in the synthesis of chemical elements 102, 104 and 105.
